26.1

26.1
Steamy

It's that time of year again when we participate in the CrossFit Open. Buddie has big goals for this year to score as high as he can because he is the youngest in his age group. (55-59 year old men) They go by the age you are turning that year, so even though he's still 54, he gets to go against the olders. He's been focused on training and nutrition, getting the best sleep he can. He talked to our coaches about his goals. We adjusted travel plans to accommodate the schedule. We're all in.

Then, on Monday of last week, he started to feel sick. By Friday night, when he would have typically completed the workout, we were settled at home, resting, trying to get well enough so he could complete the workout on Monday to be able to submit his score by the deadline that evening.

26.1 is:

Because of his age category, Buds only had to shoot the 20 pound wall ball to the 9 foot target, and he was allowed to do box step overs for the entire workout.

Those are positive modifications, but his lungs were still going to be greatest limiting factor. He was coughing a great deal, and he hadn't worked out in a week. This was going to be interesting.

We headed to the gym on Monday morning, and our coach kindly offered to be his official judge so I could focus on cheering and supporting.

Talking about the plan.

The blessing was that the workout was only going to be 12 minutes, but when you are digging down deep and trying to catch your breath, that's an eternity.

Here we go:

A 24" box is high when you have short femurs.

A mighty step

He took very few breaks, and between one coach judging, another coach bossing, and me cheering, he got through it.

His final score was 191 reps completed, which puts him at around the 65% for his age group. He had to lay on the floor for awhile after the workout was over.

Tomorrow we learn what 26.2 holds. Fingers crossed for something with a barbell which will give Buds a chance to shine. Also praying for the cough to settle down more so he can have full use of his lungs for the last two weeks of the open.

Smoking hot.

Always an adventure.
