The Trees of Seville - Europe 2023

One thing that immediately stood out about Seville, compared to Madrid (Seville’s hulking Spanish cousin), is the pleasant size and variety of its plazas.

European cities embrace walking and public space. But walks need a destination, and public life needs a stage. Plazas fill this role. Often abutting a beautiful cathedral or emphasizing a public building (like the town hall), the plaza is the busker’s stage and the tourist’s destination. This means they’re full of music, the bustle of crowds, and the clink of diners.

In Seville, plazas are also graced by beautiful, absolutely massive specimen trees. Let me show you a few.

The presence of palms was a surprise

The famous Patio de los Naranjos (orange tree courtyard) at the Seville Cathedral. We missed both the flowers and the fruit.

By the Setas is this massive arching specimen that complements the curves of the mushrooms.
