Oscar Nominated Shorts-Live Action
Yesterday afternoon, after dropping Monkey off at work, Buds and I scooped up two friends and went to see the next set of Oscar Shorts: Live Action. Overall we enjoyed more of these than we did of the animated shorts. As I texted a friend last night; 3 were great, 1 was good, 1 was weird.
Let's get the weird out of the way:
The longest of the ones we saw and so very, very French.
The Oscars were last night, so we know that "Two People Exchanging Saliva" won, sharing the win with "The Singers," which was one of our favorites.
"The Singers" is showing on Netflix, so I can only show you a trailer, but trust me when I tell you it is worth your time to watch. Humor and sorrow and humanity, and probably a few people you recognize, not because you know them, but you certainly know people like them. We loved it. In addition, Buds had read the Russian short story it was based on, so it was interesting for him to watch with that prior knowledge.
The next one was powerful and very human, but also painful to watch. How easily lives are altered by decisions outside their control.
Butcher's Stain can be watched on Kanopy using a library card to create an account.
Next up is our second group favorite, my personal favorite of all of them. This one can be watched on Disney+. It was a glorious delight, and a little teary.
The final film had us crying with laughter, and we enjoyed it so much, we got Monkey to watch it as soon as she got home from work and her cackles delighted us, too.
When you have a main character named "Estrogenia" and a supporting character called "Vagianna," you know it's going to be funny.
We'll head to the theater one more time tonight to see the Documentary shorts. I already know which one won the Oscar, and I already know the ones tonight are going to be heartbreaking. Powerful, necessary stories so often are.
