Porto Day 6 - Europe 2023

Porto Day 6 - Europe 2023

Buds and I were up early so we headed out to explore and grab a coffee. Since coffee shops open on Portuguese timelines, which can mean 8:30 or 9 a.m., we found the beautiful Dom Louis I Bridge and enjoyed the views from there.

We walked around other parts of the city to get our mental maps started.
My mind can’t really process what this statue represents. Buds suggested a sculptor planning a crucifixion memorial.

The Speciality Coffee here opened at 8:30 and we were the first customers.

We both had cappuccinos. The counter was quite high, so after she set the cups of coffee on them, Buds got ready to pour sugar in his without looking in the cup and she looked concerned. She put up a hand to stop him before he poured and directed us, “First look at my design I made for you!”

We looked and complimented, she smiled and thanked; everyone was happy.

Back at the apartment we picked up Yessa and met our travel companions at the start of our Porto walking tour. It was led by a fellow originally from Dublin named Caoimhin. Pronounced “kwee-veen.”

We weren’t as enamored of this walking tour as the Lisbon one, but we did walk all over the city and see various spots of beauty.

Before the tour got rolling. Please note Bob made it, too.
Singing Bob’s theme song.

World’s most beautiful McDonald’s.

We didn’t eat here. Just popped in.

City Hall.

We walked all over the city and by the end we were all hungry and pretty over Kwee-veen and the stories of debauchery and randomness. We stopped at this beautiful overlook, which would have been a great ending spot, but he trudged us to one last spot.

Great view. Are we done now?

We did get a group picture at the final stop.

We were ready to gnaw off each other’s arms, so the meat-eaters headed off for Porto’s famous sandwich, a Francesinha.

They declared it a winner, although there was significant variation on how frequently they would want to eat one. 😆

Bread, meat, meat, meat, bread, sauce.

The non-meat eaters headed toward sushi. We, too, were thrilled with the outcome.

Fanta orange always takes me back to walking in Retiro Park in Madrid on my very first trip to Europe.

Our sushi was made by two guys in a small little shop. They were super friendly, as everyone has been in Portugal, and so very thankful we had stopped in. It helped reset our moods after the too-long, too-random tour, and being hangry.

Details are sketchy for me on the rest of the night. We caught up on laundry, visited a book store, talked to loved ones back home. Some folks walked down to try to catch the sunset from the bridge, but the clouds did not cooperate.

A quiet ending to a full day.

We did get a picture for our great-nephew Cruz, so that’s worth it. 💖
