"You Can't See How Far You've Come."

When I was leaving the Y this morning, I heard a man talking on his cell phone. I’m making some leaps of imagination here, but based on what he said, and how he was saying it, I think he is an AA sponsor who was talking to one of his “mentees.”

He was saying, “Once you get sober, and then fall back, it feels like you are starting over because you can’t see how far you’ve come.”

“Sober” could be replaced with any word that describes your personal speed bump.

“Once you get fit…”

“Once you get well…”

“Once you get over x…”

Everyone needs a sponsor to call when you are feeling overwhelmed and scared and worthless. Friend, family, life-partner…sponsors come in many disguises.
