Tinkering
We tried out the “Tinkers’ Garage” at the Adventure Science Center before our Robotics class today. I didn’t take any pictures because I was too focused on standing close to the children to be ready when a finger got sawed off or hammered. They didn’t do either of those things, but they did work with the real tools, and if they had chosen, could have done those exciting things!
It was interesting to have a space just for them to create in with materials we don’t generally use to create around the house: scraps of wood, PVC pipe, screws and nails of all sizes, duct tape, string, and clamps and files and hammers of all sizes.
I was reminded that learning to hammer and saw and screw are skills, and I’m so thankful that I had a dad who ensured I knew how to do all those things with semi-success. I need to make sure our crew has those same chances, and today was a great start.
